Multiple Sclerosis experts from around the globe gathered in Montreal, Canada in early June for the 25th annual meeting of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers (CMSC). MidAmerica Neuroscience Institute was represented this year by
Doug Schell, advanced practice nurse at the Institute's Multiple Sclerosis Center.

At one of the workshops, Doug, along with Dr. David Brandes of Nashville, TN, presented information on sleep disorders and MS. Dr. Brandes presented information on what is scientifically known about MS and sleep disorders. Doug then talked about the ways that this scientific knowledge can be put into practice everyday to improve the lives of people with MS.
It was back in 2004 that the MS Center at
MidAmerica Neuroscience Institute discovered and presented their research on the high occurrence of sleep disorders in MS patients versus the general population. The principal lesson from that research is that the fatigue, malaise and cognitive difficulties often experienced by MS patients can and should be evaluated and treated independently of MS rather than as another symptom of MS.
As a Multiple Sclerosis Certified Nurse at MidAmerica Neuroscience Institute for the past 6 years, Doug drew on over 11 years of experience with many patients as well as the Institute’s staff members for his presentation. He would especially like to thank
sleep center staff members Travis Mecum and Mark Varona for their suggestions.
