Paving The Way For New Multiple Sclerosis Treatments

MidAmerica Neuroscience Institute recently participated in a clinical research trial comparing the investigational drug alemtuzumab to the approved Multiple Sclerosis therapy Rebif, in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis.  This clinical research trial was sponsored by Sanofi and its subsidiary Genzyme.  The first phase of the study is now complete and the results released on July 11, 2011 show that two annual cycles of alemtuzumab treatment resulted in a reduction in relapse rate compared to Rebif over the two years of the study.

The study also examined accumulation of disability and found that while those who received alemtuzumab did in fact have a lower rate of accumulated disability when compared to Rebif, these results were not clinically significant.  The company attributes these findings to the fact that both groups were remarkably stable over the two year time period which reduced their ability to detect a significant treatment effect on disability.
